This small London business dealt originally in antiques, curios\r\nand oriental seashells. These became so popular – the Victorians used them to\r\ndecorate trinket boxes in particular – that soon they formed the basis of the\r\ncompany’s profitable import and export trade with the Far East.\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp style=\"line-height: normal; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-right: 0in; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: embed;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; color: rgb(89, 89, 89);\"\u003EThe word was elevated to\r\ncorporate status in 1897, when Samuel formed the Shell Transport and Trading\r\nCompany. The first logo in 1901 was a mussel shell, but by 1904 a scallop shell\r\nor pecten emblem had been introduced to give a visual representation of the\r\ncorporate and brand name.\u003C/span\u003E\u003C/p\u003E\r\n\u003Cp style=\"line-height: normal; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-right: 0in; direction: ltr; unicode-bidi: embed;\"\u003E\u003Cspan style=\"font-size: 10.5pt; font-family: Arial; font-variant-numeric: normal; font-variant-east-asian: normal; font-variant-alternates: normal; font-variant-position: normal; color: rgb(89, 89, 89);\"\u003EWhen the Royal Dutch Petroleum\r\nCompany and Shell Transport and Trading merged in 1907, the latter’s brand name\r\nand symbol (Shell and the pecten) became the short-form name and emblem of the\r\nnew Royal Dutch Shell Group. The shortest expression is a two-second mnemonic – or key melody –\r\nthat, for example, accompanies the Pecten logo at the end of a Shell film.
